Who We Are
Open Pipes is a nonprofit organization advancing open Internet standards, public education on interconnection, and neutral public-interest infrastructure. We are led by a community of Internet infrastructure specialists who believe the routing layer of the public Internet should be open, documented, and accountable to the public.
Our Mission
To advance the public's understanding of Internet interconnection and to promote the open standards, open source tools, and neutral infrastructure that keep the Internet open and accessible. Operating regional Internet exchanges — and helping communities operate their own under our umbrella — is how we put that mission into practice.
What We Do
- Educate the public. We publish freely accessible material on BGP, routing security, traffic engineering, peering strategy, and network automation — not gated behind membership.
- Advance open standards. We contribute to, and promote adoption of, open standards and open source tools for routing, monitoring, and automation.
- Operate exchanges as a commons. We run carrier- and data center-neutral Internet exchanges with no commercial parent, no preferred partners, and no outside shareholders, on behalf of the regions they serve.
- Provide an umbrella for regional exchanges. Communities can launch self-governed regional IXes under our nonprofit structure without forming a separate nonprofit and without commercial ownership or control.
Who Benefits
Networks connect to our exchanges, but the people who benefit are the households, schools, libraries, hospitals, public agencies, and small businesses those networks serve. Local interconnection lowers transit costs for regional ISPs — savings that flow downstream to end users across the region. Educational material and open source tools we publish benefit the broader Internet community at no cost.
How We Are Governed
Open Pipes is governed by the community that operates it, on behalf of the public and the regions it serves — not on behalf of any participant. Exchange fees are set at cost recovery, not to generate surplus.
